G is for Greno Woods

Greno Woods, located on the northern edge of Sheffield, is a cherished ancient woodland spanning over 178 hectares. Managed by the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, it offers a tranquil escape into nature with a rich history and diverse ecosystems. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is home to ancient oak trees, birch, and a variety of wildlife, including deer, badgers, and a plethora of bird species like woodpeckers and nuthatches.

The woods feature well-maintained walking and cycling trails, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Among its attractions are the Iron Age hillfort remains and remnants of old coal pits, reflecting its historical significance. Seasonal highlights include a carpet of bluebells in spring and vibrant autumn colours. 

Greno Woods also plays a vital role in conservation and community engagement, hosting educational events and volunteering opportunities to promote biodiversity and sustainable woodland management.
