After our stunning morning at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park we headed a few minutes up the road for some lunch and a potter around the cathedral city of Wakefield.
Wakefield is home to a rich cultural scene, blending art, history, and architecture. The Hepworth Wakefield, a striking modern art gallery, is a key highlight. Opened in 2011, it showcases the works of British sculptor Barbara Hepworth, along with temporary exhibitions from renowned artists, set against the backdrop of the River Calder. The city is also home to the Bridge Chapel, more formally known as the Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin, a medieval gem built on a bridge over the river. It offers visitors a glimpse into Wakefield's deep historical roots. For those interested in the performing arts, the Theatre Royal, also known as the Opera House, stands as a testament to Victorian architecture. Dating back to 1894, it hosts a variety of productions, from theatre to opera, making Wakefield a city that celebrates both its artistic heritage and contemporary culture.
