Peak District Trigs and Ethels

Trig Points

Triangulation stations, commonly known as trig points, stand as enduring landmarks across the diverse landscapes of the United Kingdom. Introduced by the Ordnance Survey in the 1930s, these concrete pillars served as pivotal reference markers in mapping and navigation. Strategically positioned atop hills, mountains, and other prominent features, trig points provide surveyors, hikers, and adventurers with essential orientation points, facilitating accurate exploration of the terrain. From the rolling hills of the countryside to the rugged peaks of mountain ranges, trig points stand as silent sentinels, guiding travellers and mapping the journey of exploration across the British Isles. It's important to note that, whilst not compulsory, it is frowned upon to reach a publicly accessible trig and NOT touch it . Once touched you have officially "bagged" it!

There are 88 trig points in the Peak District, that stand within or on the National Park boundary.

Ethels

The Peak District and South Yorkshire branch of the The Countryside Charity (CPRE - was the Council for the Preservation of Rural England) announced The Ethels in May 2021 and were devised by CPRE volunteer Doug Colton who also built the "Ethel Ready" app for hill bagging.

The Ethels are 95 Peak District hilltops over 400m above sea level and significant lower prominent hills - most lie within the Peak District National Park, but some lie outside of its borders. They named as a tribute to Ethel Haythornthwaite who pioneered the establishment of the Peak District as Britain's first national park in 1951.

Bagging

We've made a list of the trig points and Ethels so we can keep track of which ones we have bagged.

It is worth noting that some of the trig points and Ethels are situated on private land, and you must gain permission from the landowner/farmer before walking to the trig or Ethel.

We decided that we would mark it as visited by walking as close as we can on public footpaths.
