Our Derbyshire A to Z

X is for X Marks The Spot (Derwent Dam)

With storms forecast we set off early and arrived at Ladybower Reservoir with the air still cool and the water looking glassy.

The dam and associated Derwent Reservoir (along with the later Ladybower) are an iconic Peak District attraction and came into being with the completion of the gritstone damn in 1916.

"During the Second World War, the reservoir was used by pilots of the 617 Squadron for practising the low-level flights needed for Operation Chastise (commonly known as the "Dam Busters" raids), due to its similarity to the German dams. Today there is a commemorative plaque to 617 Squadron on the dam" along with a later commemorative monument to a devoted local dog.

The area is the perfect jumping off point to many stunning local walks including the Ladybower Reservoir loop walk.

The dam also features on the “Peaky Wonders” app (101 historical wonders to visit around the Peak District, including many scheduled monuments and selected listed buildings).
