We headed out this morning to bag ourselves another Ethel/Trig, and our last in the southern peaks.

We started just outside Ilam, away from the hordes heading to nearby Dovedale, and took a looping route up and out around Musden Low (the trig is hidden above on private land) to Calton Green.

Musden Low (361m - SK118500) - the hill overlooks the Manifold Valley about a mile south-west of Ilam and a mile east of Calton in Staffordshire. There is no access to the summit or trig (private land) but there are public footpaths around the hill. There are four ancient bowl barrows (burial mounds) at or near the summit and they are all scheduled monuments.

From here we descended through the wooded valley with its carpets for flowering wild garlic before crossing the River Dove into the grounds of Ilam Park.

After a rather delicious ice cream in the shade we walked through the grounds of Ilam Hall, re-crossed the River Dove, and climbed back up the slops to our starting point at Blore.
