Having made good time on our trip back from Lincolnshire we couldn’t let this stunning day go to waste...
Although the steam trains weren't running today we think the Peak Rail line is a treat whatever the timetable says!
The line runs north west from Matlock, just outside the Peak District National Park, up to Rowsley. Originally part of a line that ran from Derby through to Manchester, the line went through multiple changes since it's opening in 1840.
Mainline trains now run as far as Matlock from Derby, with Peak Rail running a mixture of vintage locomotives from Matlock to Rowsley South with a stop at Darley Dale.
The adjacent footpath is beautiful and an excellent accessible route for many. There are footpaths running through the fields along the and across the valley and it's well worth exploring.
So get strolling or rolling and get your railway geek on!
