Burngreave Cemetery, originally known as the Brightside Bierlow Cemetery, was established in 1860. It was originally built on land which then comprised part of the Burn Greave woods, a quarry, shale pits and mines. It was later extended in 1900 when it became known as Burngreave Cemetery. It currently covers 37 acres and to date over 158,000 burials have taken place there.
