Hutcliffe Wood and Marriott Wood are ancient woodlands situated on the steep southeastern side of the Abbeydale valley, between Archer Road and Abbey Lane. Hutcliffe Wood is west of Hutcliffe Wood Road, while Marriott Wood is to the east.
Historically, the woods were managed using the coppice-with-standards technique for charcoal production, and ganister (a type of hard, siliceous sandstone) mining also likely occurred in the area, both supporting local industries.
Today, the woods are home to mature deciduous trees and are managed by Sheffield City Council to benefit wildlife and provide recreational space for the public, with several footpaths running through them.
