Our Derbyshire A to Z

N is for New Mills

After our morning hike we headed across to the fantastic and quirky town of New Mills on the westernmost boundary of Derbyshire at the confluence of the rivers Goytt and Sett.

Central to this small town is a 70ft gorge that contains Torr Vale Mill a grade II listed former cotton mill. The valley has been transformed into The Torrs Riverside Park known as the park ‘under the town’.

Along one cliff sits the incredible Millenium Walkway, a 175 yard raised walkway that gives links to the park and mill and takes you around the weir.

With the sun shining we took a moment to enjoy lunch (vegan Korean burgers with kimchi and tempeh) at the brilliant The Shrub Club which is housed in the mill building.

After lunch (and a snooze!) we took more historical treats as well as swinging by the legendary Swizzles factory, home of many a childhood sweet treat.

We ended our day at Torrside Brewing, an excellent small brewery on the wharf next to the canal. It's perfect on a warm day with a taproom that's open to the elements and incredibly dog friendly (water and treats were plentiful).
