L is for Limestone Way

Chilly but sunny. The perfect morning for another of our Derbyshire favourites and this route's a cracker.

Rolling hills, historic properties and we even squeezed in a trig!

We set off from the pretty village of Parwich headed southwest on the Limestone Way in the direction of Thorpe.

The route is 46 miles long (74km) and runs through the White Peak from Castleton in the north to Rocester (Staffordshire) in the south. Developed as a route less than 25 years ago, it originally ended in Matlock but was extended in 1992 to join up with the Staffordshire Way.

The southern Derbyshire section crosses the equally brilliant Tissington Trail, an old train line running from Parsley Hay near a Buxton to Ashbourne.

We passed through historic Tissington with its stunning Grade II listed Jacobean hall, continuing on the trail to the village of Thorpe, near Dovedale and the Manifold Valley before turning off the trail and heading east to Fenny Bentley.

We walked north through sheep filled fields (so many adorable lambs) to the east side of Tissington and along a short stretch of the Tissington Trail, then up and over Wibben Hill. The Trig is tucked behind a stand of trees.

Finally we looped back around the valley to finish in Parwich. Despite the threat of wintery showers we even snuck in a pint in the sun to finish our 15km stroll.
