Pound's Park

Welcome to Pound's Park. This is the site of the former Sheffield Central Fire Station, which was opened in 1984 and demolished in 2010 after South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service moved to a new state-of-the-art building on Eyre Street. The park was created as part of Sheffield City Council's Heart of the City project and opened to the public in April 2023. The design of the park incorporates several pieces of public art inspired by various community groups across the city.

The park is named after John Charles Pound (1833-1918), Sheffield's first Fire Superintendent, who was responsible for creating Sheffield's municipal fire brigade in 1869. Mr Pound worked his way up the ranks to become the Assistant Superintendent and Engineer in Nottingham before taking up the post in Sheffield. After a long and eventful career, including several brushes with danger and near misses, Superintendent Pound retired from service in 1895 due to ill health. By the time of his death in 1918 Superintendent Pound had left a significant mark on the city and its fire brigade.
