The City Road Cemetery opened in May 1881 as Intake Road Cemetery. Spanning 100 acres, it is Sheffield's largest municipal cemetery and houses the head office for Bereavement Services. The cemetery includes Sheffield Crematorium, where the first cremation occurred in 1905. In 2002, it was designated a Grade II registered park by Historic England.

The cemetery features a Grade II listed gatehouse at the main entrance on City Road. It holds 220 Commonwealth war graves from WWI and 147 from WWII, with additional memorials for those whose graves couldn't be marked. There are also memorials for civilians killed in air raids, notably 134 victims of the 1940 Sheffield Blitz.

Several notable structures within the cemetery are Grade II listed, including the gatehouse, crematorium, chapel, Catholic chapel, Harwich Road gate, Belgian War Memorial, and the Blitz grave memorial.
